...Megan Alessa Mallatt was dead, as the result of a car accident. She was returning from watching her b/f Warren's basketball game on Valentine's Day in Kentucky at his college. It was just Megan and Warren's father, and at 2:40 a.m. on Sunday morning, Warren's father fell asleep at the wheel. The truck swerved off the road, into a culvert, flipped, and landed upside down near a driveway. Megan was partially ejected through a window (she hadn't been wearing her seatbelt), and Warren's father lived. Megan was killed almost instantly. Luckily, Megan had been asleep during the accident, therefore she wasn't aware of what was happening to her, and more than likely felt no pain.

PHS dedicates Megan Mallatt Activities Center

When Megan Mallatt was a member of the Pittsburg High School pom pon dance squad, she and other spirit squad members had to practice in the halls or the commons area. "They never got to practice in the gym," noted her mother, Brenda Mallatt, because PHS had only one gym then and it was crowded with athletes who also had to practice.

All that has changed now because of the nearly 35,000-square foot Megan Mallatt Activity Center, named for the PHS senior who died in an automobile accident Feb. 15, 2004.

Family members and hundreds of friends gathered Sunday for the formal dedication of the $2.5 million center.

Jeff Elliott, president of the USD 250 Foundation board, served as master of ceremonies, with Dan Moss delivering the invocation and PHS Encore singing the national anthem.

Speakers included many who knew Mallatt, including family friend Ron Marrone, who told of Saturday afternoons when she played with his daughters.

"They would play dress-up as I watched Saturday afternoon football, and they'd go into my wife's closet, then come down for a fashion show," Marrone said. "Then my wife would come home, go upstairs and yell back down, ‘I thought you were watching the girls!' Thanks for the memory, Megan."

He also read a statement from the Mallatt family — parents Keith and Brenda Mallatt and brother Ryan Mallatt — expressing their thanks to all who helped make the building a reality.

"Megan's brother, Ryan, said how great it would be if people could feel the way Megan felt every day," Marrone said. "She loved her family, the other students and her friends, and all other she came into contact with during her brief life."

Mary Packard, Mallatt's volleyball coach, recalled the talented young athlete. "Megan represented volleyball in the best possible way," she said.

Merle Clark, PHS teacher and football coach, said the two words that came to his mind were pride and flexibility. Physical education teachers had to be flexible because of the school's limited space.

"We might have three classes in the gym at the same time," he said. "And the addition of the second gym in the center makes more room in our weight room, which is the most widely used room in the building. It's not just the athletes who use the weight room, but many other students as well."

The school now has a facility that all can be proud of. "I know that Megan is very proud of it, too," Clark said.

Doug Hitchcock, PHS activities/athletic director, noted that PHS was formerly one of the only high schools in its category to have a single gymnasium. Now it is one of the only schools to have a separate room for its spirit squad.

And it's a very well designed room, according to Rhonda White, PHS teacher and coach. "Before, the spirits squads would be in the halls and they would position themselves in front of the office windows and hope to see their reflections in the glass," she said. "The new room has tiered mirrors, so the cheerleaders scan see themselves practice their stunts, as well as full-length mirrors for the dances. We also have our own locker room."

Beth Simpson introduced the new PHS pom pon squad, which did a routine.

Gary Price, USD 250 superintendent of schools, formally accepted the center, which was built with private donations, on behalf of the district. "This is a great day in the life of the community and this school," he said.

"It's great to get to this point," Keith Mallatt said following the ceremony.

"I know that Megan is in heaven and she's absolutely loving this," added her mother. "At the same time, she'd probably be a little embarrassed because, despite all the things she was involved in, Megan was a shy person."
